We are excited to share the highlights from the MCAQ Basketball Championship Tournament 2025, a vibrant and inspiring event that brought together Mongolian youth and community members across Queensland.

A heartfelt thank you goes to Chuck Hebert for beautifully capturing the event through photos, and to Billy Bilguun for creating an energetic atmosphere as DJ at the closing ceremony. We also extend special appreciation to emerging artist Khosbayar Badral (Artist: Mind) for sharing his music and talent with our community.

Held over two exciting days, the event showcased not only competitive basketball but also the power of sport in building friendships, teamwork, and cultural connection among Mongolian youth.

Mongolian Lunar New Year – Year of the Fire Horse

On 21 February, the Mongolian community in Queensland warmly celebrated Tsagaan Sar (Mongolian Lunar New Year) for the Year of the Fire Horse in a friendly and welcoming atmosphere.

Although the celebration was held in a small and intimate setting, the event included many meaningful traditional activities such as greetings (zolgolt), Mongolian wrestling, art competition, poetry, and enjoying traditional foods including buuz, airag, and dairy products (tsagaan idee). The celebration continued into the evening with a Mongolian film screening, creating a joyful and culturally rich New Year gathering.

Ms. Oyunaa, President of the Mongolian Community Association, highlighted that national celebrations like Tsagaan Sar can sometimes bring feelings of homesickness for people living far from Mongolia. However, the event created a special opportunity for community members to meet elders, share warm conversations, and connect with others who feel like brothers and sisters, even if meeting for the first time. The day was filled with pride in Mongolian culture and shared traditions.

It was especially encouraging to see many parents bringing their children to experience and learn about Mongolian cultural heritage. The wrestling competition included both children and adults. Experienced senior wrestlers kindly guided the younger participants, teaching traditional techniques and sharing knowledge, which made the event even more meaningful.

A special highlight of the event was the participation of two Australians who joined the wrestling competition. Their interest and willingness to take part in this traditional sport brought great joy to the Mongolian community. It was a proud and heartwarming moment to share Mongolian culture with Australians and strengthen cultural understanding.

We would like to sincerely thank all volunteers and organising team members who dedicated their time, effort, and care to create such a successful and warm celebration. We also express our heartfelt gratitude to all elders, guests, and community members who attended and made the day memorable.

Tsagaan Sar continues to be an important time for Mongolians living abroad to stay connected to their culture, strengthen community bonds, and pass traditions on to the next generation.
